What today's A-level results actually tell parents of younger children
Around 300,000 UK 18-year-olds collected A-level results today, 13 August 2026. Behind the headline grades sits a pattern most parents don't look at until they're already at the end of the journey: the biggest predictors of A-level outcomes are visible seven to ten years earlier, in Year 5-8 decisions about school, subject readiness and pace. The 2024-25 baseline shows why.
What is actually different about results day 2026?
Results were released on Thursday 13 August 2026. This year is the first time Ofqual has published results at local-authority level on results day itself — its Analytics platform now lets any parent see qualification outcomes and uptake by local authority district, administrative county or unitary authority, in almost real time. Previously that geographic detail took months to appear.
That change matters because it lets families look at their own borough's or county's outcomes against the national picture, rather than the national picture alone. Two boroughs on either side of the same London river can look nothing alike on this data.
What did the 2024-25 baseline actually show?
The most recent complete DfE release (A level and other 16 to 18 results, 2024-25) puts the average A-level grade at B- and the average point score at 36.09 — up from 35.55 the year before. In the government's own words, that translates to roughly one-twentieth of a grade of improvement year on year. Not the story of a system suddenly getting better; the story of one that is slowly recovering after the disruption of 2020-22.
The distribution matters more than the average. London and the South East have consistently achieved the highest average point scores over the last five years. The North East achieved the weakest, falling by 0.2 points year on year in 2024-25 — a full grade below the top regions across a typical three-subject set.
Female students outperformed male students by 0.9 points, a gap that has narrowed from 1.2 the year before. The disadvantaged-pupil gap — the difference between pupils on free-school-meal eligibility and their peers — was 4.6 points, alongside a retention gap of 86.2% versus 93.5%. White students achieved the highest scores; Black or Black British students scored on average 3.4 points lower.
Why should a parent of a Year 4 or Year 8 pay attention?
Because the school-level factors that produce those gaps at 18 are not set at 18. They are set much earlier: the primary school that got a child fluent in reading and mental arithmetic by end of Year 4; the transition to a secondary school that grouped by ability in a way that suited that child; the sixth-form choice that matched the child's actual working style rather than the family's reputational instinct.
The regional data is a reminder that geography does a lot of work: a strong state grammar in Buckinghamshire or a good comprehensive in a leafy South-East borough tends to produce A-level results comparable to a mid-band independent. The same child, in a school outside those catchments, might not.
The disadvantaged-pupil data is the most confronting number in the release: 4.6 points is a full grade difference across the average pupil's three subjects, and it has been persistent for a decade. Some of that gap closes with targeted early intervention — the strongest single lever in the Education Endowment Foundation's evidence base — and some of it closes with the specific choice of secondary school. Neither happens at 18. Both happen at 8.
What the numbers can't tell you
A-level averages hide as much as they reveal. Two children at the same school with the same overall grades can have entirely different futures depending on which specific subjects they took, how they performed under exam conditions, and what they actually want at 22.
Subject choice matters more than most rankings admit. STEM A-levels (Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry) have consistently the highest average grades in Ofqual's outcomes data — partly because the strongest pupils self-select into them. Choosing them because 'they look impressive' when the child isn't strong in them is a well-documented route to a worse result than a different subject mix would have produced.
University destinations are a separate story again. UCAS's acceptance data (a different dataset from JCQ's results data) shows that university outcomes at 18 depend as much on GCSE grade profile, personal-statement strength, and specific-course interview performance as on the raw A-level grades themselves.
How to use today's numbers as a family with a younger child
First: look at your own local-authority breakdown on Ofqual's analytics platform. Not the national average — your specific area. If it's above the national baseline, the local schools are contributing to the average that pulls the country up. If it's below, understand which schools inside the LA are outperforming and which are pulling the LA's average down. This information was harder to get to a year ago.
Second: if you have a child in Year 4-8, use the eight years of runway to do the two things the data suggests matter most — get their reading and mental-arithmetic fluency to age-appropriate levels or above (see 'How much reading should a Year 4 be doing?' and 'Is mental arithmetic still important?'), and take the school choice at 11+ or 13+ seriously enough to visit, ask the right questions, and choose fit rather than reputation.
Third: don't spend the eight years worrying. The 2024-25 baseline shows a system that is broadly stable, with slow annual improvement, and with the biggest gains concentrated in schools that combine strong teaching with disciplined pastoral setup — factors you can see on an open day if you know what to look for (see the open-day checklist).

Your questions answered
Is a B- average bad?
No. B- is where the average has sat for several years and it is a decent overall result. The whole distribution matters more than the mean: some subjects and regions cluster well above; others sit below. What matters for your child is their specific grades in their specific subjects — not where they sit on the national average.
Should we be worried that boys are underperforming girls?
The gap is real (0.9 points in 2024-25) but has narrowed year on year. If you have a boy, the useful response is not worry but attention to the specific under-performance patterns — pacing, exam technique, revision strategy — that show up in Deep Teaching's own diagnostic data. How much of the disadvantaged-pupil gap is unfixable?
Less than the numbers make it look. The Education Endowment Foundation's Teaching and Learning Toolkit shows targeted early intervention (small-group tuition, structured phonics, feedback) closes a substantial share when applied early. The gap at 18 is largely a gap accumulated over 13 years of schooling; it responds to earlier action better than to later action.
